Guarinus, Alexander = Guarini, Alessandro (1521),

Alexandri Guarini Ferrariensis in C. V. Catullum Veronensem per Baptistam Patrem Emendatum Expositiones … (Venetiis). --- An edition of Catullus with commentary. Alexander Guarinus took many of his ideas about the text of Catullus from his father Baptista, but surely not all: note 30.7 inique me, not mentioned in the commentary, where Alexander has surely taken over Avantius’ conjecture, whose work he knew, witness 80.8; and note also 55.4, where Alexander tells what his father thought and adds an idea of his own. In this repertory all the new readings that are proposed in the commentary or appear in the edition are assigned to Alexander, except for those that he explicitly attributes in the commentary to his father.

a copy of Guyet (ante 1656) made around 1670-1700 by Broukhusius, now Berlin, Deutsche Staatsbibliothek – Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Bibl. Diez. oct. 2436. – There are some minor differences between this and Guyet (ante 1656 b). I suspect that both may have been copied from Guyet’s autograph, or perhaps from an earlier copy of it. Alternatively, (a) could be a copy of (b); the other way around seems very unlikely.

Teuffel, Die Gedichte des Catullus in den Versmaßen der Urschrift übersetzt (Stuttgart), at 107-150 (‘Anmerkungen’). – The ‘Anmerkungen’ are not signed by either editor of this volume. Schwabe (1866) attributes the conjectures in Catullus to Teuffel, but later critics such as Baehrens attribute them to Hertzberg, who had translated all the poems affected (see pp. 151-2). There are probable or possible reflections of some of the conjectures in Hertzberg’s and Teuffel’s translations published in 1855 (without a Latin text or critical notes). It is sometimes believed that the bilingual edition already appeared in 1843; but that supposed first edition is a mirage based on a misreading of a note by Ellis on 68b.139.

Latini, Latino (ca. 1513-1593) (1677),

Latini Latinii Viterbiensis Bibliotheca Sacra et Profana ... a Dominico Macro Melitensi ... Editae (Romae), 2 vols. – Latini’s marginalia on Catullus, added in a copy of Muretus (1554), are printed in vol. 2, on pp. 56-7. Some variants are followed by a letter ‘O’, which indicates that they come from an earlier edition; others by an ‘L’, which indicates that they are conjectures of Latini’s; a few are unmarked. These attributions appear so unreliable that here they are ignored altogether, and all variants are simply attributed to Latini. He has evidently taken over some of Pucci’s notes.

marginalia in a copy of Ald. (1515), now Berlin, Deutsche Staatsbibliothek – Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Diez. oct. 2474. For a collation see Bellido Díaz (2011). Bellido Díaz explains that while the date 1528 is found at two places in these marginalia, they were clearly composed over a number of years. On fol. 148r Petreius notes that he was using various sources for his marginala, including books of Pontanus, of a Bishop of Cremona who is surely to be identified with Benedetto Accolti (1497-1549, bishop from 1523), of Francesco Pucci (to wit, he copied many of the marginalia of Pucci), and other volumes in Rome and Florence. Where Petreius’ notes coincide with those of Puccius, he is quoted as Puccius (1502p).

Scaliger, Iosephus (1577),

Castigationes in Catullum, Tibullum, Propertium (Lutetiae). – Scaliger uses intensively the codex MS. 52 a. 1467, which he sometimes misreads. MS. 52 writes quoi for cui (though sometimes he sticks to cui, according to the collation I am using); Scaliger uses similar forms much more often, such as quum for the conjunction cum, and quur for cur. He even writes polcher for pulc(h)er (79.1 and 79.3). His penchant for archaic orthography is connected to what he found in MS. 52 (cfr. p. 92: ‘In nostro duo antiqui characteris extabant vestigia, mei, & pervres’, on 77.3: the first of these forms go back to the archetype, the second is an innovation found in MS. 52), and accordingly, he is influenced by the archaizing spelling adopted on occasion by the scribe of MS. 52, Pacificus Irenaeus Maximus of Ascoli. He sometimes misreports the readings of the manuscript, most notably on p. 82, where he quotes its title as Q. valerI catvlli ad cor. nepotem libellus. In fact the title of MS. 52 reads Q. Valerij Catulli poetae Verone(n)sis Ad Cornelium Nepotem Liber i(n)cipit :~ feliciter.

handwritten notes on Catullus, now Berlin, Staatsbibliothek – Preussischer Kulturbesitz, MS. Diez. B. Sant. 44. – Schrader wrote in a minute, heavily abbreviated hand, his notes reflect the creative chaos of brainstorming, and they have been conserved in utter confusion, with notes on Catullus conserved out of sequence among notes on Propertius, Tibullus, and other authors. I could not make sense of some parts of his notes; I may have misunderstood some other passages. Often it is hard to tell whether Schrader is making a conjecture of his own or advocating a reading he has found somewhere else.
